CHAPTER 12: THE LAST CHAPTER
It took three days for everyone to complete their part of the plan. Zaq had found out a few days ago that Renee and Rufus are planning to attack Leo and I in the Clearing during lunch. Zaq said they were going to take control of all the Nevers’ shadows and use them to finally end us once and for all.
But I already had a plan.
My plan will work even better with Renee and Rufus’ new plan. Zaq had already carried out his part of the plan by overhearing Renee and Rufus, so I told Leo, Ted, Amelia, and my Evergirl friends what to do and they have all done what I asked.
I powder myself with blush as I sit at my vanity. I am waiting for Leo, Ted, Amelia, Denise, Tessa, Sydney, and Emily to arrive.
There is a knock at the door. I get up and open the door. “Ted, hi!” I wave him in and close the door behind him. Ted is wearing the traditional blue-and-gold Ever uniform and his hair is styled perfectly. I tuck my hair behind my ear and ask him as he sits in one of the pink chairs, “You ready for the battle today?”
Ted takes a deep breath in. “I hope so. This will be my first battle. But I’m sure everything will be fine. I sent word to my knight friends from Foxwood like you asked.”
“Good,” I say. “Did they bring their swords?”
Ted nods.
Suddenly, there is another knock on the door. I go to get it, but Ted jumps up first and insists on getting it.
Ted opens the door and I see Leo and Amelia in their Ever uniforms, with Zaq and the Evergirls behind them. “Come on in, guys,” Ted says and closes the door behind them.
No one sits. We are all too anxious for lunch, when the battle will begin.
“Okay, everyone,” I say placing my hands on my hips. “Let’s make sure everyone did their parts. Leo? Did you send word to Father and ask for all his knights with their swords?” Leo nods. “Ted has already called for his knights friends from Foxwood. Evergirls? Did you make sure every first year Everboy knows the plan and has their swords during lunch?” Tessa nods. “And Amelia,” I say, “Did you alert your mother and ask for all of her knights and their swords?”
“Yes,” Amelia says.
Leo raises an eyebrow. “Wait, Amelia’s mom is coming? Anna? But won’t Father be here, too…?”
I bite my lip. Two former enemies on the same side?
Ted stands up and goes next to me. “Anna and Hans will be fine. Hans isn’t a villain anymore. He may have done some bad things to her before, but he regrets them now. I’m sure Amelia’s mom will understand.” I smile. Ted’s right.
“Um, guys?” asks Zaq. We look at him. “It’s lunch time.”
Ted places a hand on my shoulder as I say, “Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s go win this battle.”

I am shaking as I get my lunch tray and sit down at our usual table, surrounded by Denise, Tessa, Sydney, Emily, and Amelia. I look around and see Ted, Leo, and Zaq sitting at the table next to us. Ted gives me a thumbs up. I look around to find every Everboy with a gleaming sword hanging at their side.
Soon, I see two figures on the other side of the Clearing standing on a table. Renee and Rufus.
“Hey, AMBER!” shouts Renee.
“What’s up, PRINCE BOY?!” yells Rufus, snickering.
I look at the Evers around me. This is it.
I stand up. “Hey Renee. Nice day out, isn’t it? Nice and sunny.”
Renee’s evil smile falters for a second, then returns. “Who needs the sun when you have these?!” she and Rufus look at each other. Then they look out at the Nevers seated around them. Renee suddenly opens her palms to the sky, and so does Rufus. “Shadows, ARISE!” they shout.
We watch in wonder as the shadow of every Nevergirl and Neverboy arises from behind them. The many shadows stand on top of the tables and turn toward me and Leo with clenched fists.
“No Never can turn Good, no matter what you or your dumb father claim,” says Renee. She and Rufus start to raise their hands, but I interrupt.
“If that’s what you think, why don’t you just ask him?”
Suddenly there is a huge slashing sound and everyone turns to the School for Good and Evil gates. Beyond them, there is a ginormous ice tower rising up out of the ground. On top of it stands a large group of people in silver shining suits. Gasps are heard as everyone notices the three figures at the front of the ice tower.

I smile as Renee and Rufus gape at the huge ice structure sitting outside the school.
Suddenly, the knights on top of the ice tower raise their swords at once.
I see Renee and Rufus’ eyes go wide, They look at each other and yell, “ATTACK, SHADOWS!”
Suddenly, all the shadows on the Never side of the Clearing are charging toward us. Their fists are raised, and they look angry.
Leo and I run to the back of the Clearing, guarded by all the Everboys and Evergirls. I pant as I watch fights break out.
A few shadows fight Ted, but he expertly holds them off with his shiny sword. He guides them slowly to the top of a table and holds them there. Zaq guides some shadows to the table, too. The other Everboys use their swords to close in most of the shadows to the center of the Clearing. Once all of the shadows are there, Leo and I look at each other.
“It’s go-time,” he says confidently.
I nod, and then turn to the ice tower. I give a thumbs-up to Father, who then alerts Elsa and Anna.
Elsa turns around to the large group of knights behind her on the ice. She shouts something, and then turns around. The knights aim their swords toward the sun, and then angle them so they reach the group of shadows. I turn to the Everboys. “EVERBOYS!” I shout. “NOW!”
The Everboys all suddenly stop fighting the shadows, who are gathered in one group in the center of the Clearing. The boys angle their swords to reach the sun and the group of shadows.
All of the swords, both the knights atop the ice and the Everboys down on the Clearing, reflect the sun powerfully and strike the shadows. The shadows are overcome by all the light. They wave their hands in the air and try to stop it, but all the light from the swords beams on top of them and they slowly shrivel down. There is so much light on them, the shadows are melting. They all slowly disintegrate into nothing.
There is silence as the Everboys lower their swords.
The knights atop the ice sculpture lower their swords as well.
Everyone stares at the spot where all the shadows used to be. Leo and I smile.
The plan has succeeded.
I look over at Renee and Rufus, who are standing frozen on the table. Their shoulders have slumped and their faces are blank.
“Our shadows…” says Rufus quietly.
“Our plan failed,” squeaks Renee.
They both suddenly look at Leo and I. Their faces grow angry. They start to charge toward us. Renee’s fists are raised and she is feet from me. I look around. There is nowhere for me to run.
I close my eyes tight, thinking this is the end.
I wait for the blow.
It doesn’t come.
I open my eyes to find Renee standing inches from me. She has a crazed look in her eye, mad with rage. She doesn’t blink or move.
She is enclosed in a block of ice.
I look over at Rufus, who was one second away from getting Leo, frozen in an ice block.
I step out from behind the ice with my nemesis trapped inside. I look up at Elsa on top of the ice tower. She winks at me and I yell, “Thanks!”
Suddenly, Leo says, “Hey, who’s that guy frozen in a block of ice up there? He’s on the ice tower!”
I look closer and see a man enclosed in a block of ice like Renee and Rufus. I gasp. “It’s Uncle Ray! Queen Elsa got him, too!”
Leo cheers and gives me a high-five.
“Guys, we did it! We beat Renee and Rufus!” Ted shouts. All the Evers break into cheers, while the Nevers just look around with open mouths.
I am surrounded by cheering Evers. “We did it!” Amelia yells, and I see Leo grab her and give her a kiss.
I celebrate and dance with all my Evergirl friends and the Everboys are excited to have been in their first battle.
As my other friends are twirling around in celebration, I find someone taking my hand and pulling me out of the crowd.
“Ted!” I say as he spins me around. “We did it! We beat them just like you said we would! Everything turned out perfect!”
Ted smiles and pulls me close. “It will be perfect… once I do this.” Then Ted leans in and kisses me.
I melt in his arms and place my hands around his neck. I have dreamed about this since I saw Ted.
So this is what a happily ever after feels like.
When Ted and I finally pull apart, I look up at the ice tower. On top, I see the knights cheering and Elsa standing nearby. I see my father and Amelia’s mother facing each other.
Father says a few words. Then Anna smiles and nods. Father extends his hand and Anna shakes it, as if she is forgiving him for what he did.
I smile. That’s when I know Renee was truly wrong when she said Nevers can’t turn Good. My father is living proof that they can.
I may be a former villain’s daughter, and I may have a little bit of Evil in me. But, even if I am the daughter of King Hans of the Southern Isles, I’m an Ever.
And I’m a proud one.
A pretty one, too.
