Chapter 1: An Ever of Jaunt Jolie
The sun shined onto Eva’s face, signaling a new day.
She brushed her short silver hair that bobbed above her ear. Her father would always rustle it and say that it ‘felt like a cloud.’ Ever since he passed away, she always kept it in its fluffy condition in memory of him. Eva looked into the mirror, her golden eyes staring back at her. She brought her hands to her hazelnut face. Her acquaintances said that she looked like an angel without wings.
The only problem was that she didn’t have any magical powers, they would say.
They were wrong.
Nobody knew, but she did have an ability. But it wasn’t ‘Ever-like.’ It was more of an Evil power. Her father knew, and he was the one who told her that she should never tell anybody about it. He planned on telling her mother, but before he could do so, he had been called off into war and was murdered. He was a lord, and he wasn’t supposed to be out in the war field. He had his knights and army to send. But the war got too hard. Eventually, all men had to leave for the battle. He never came back, even after six years. He was as good as dead.
So nobody except her knew about her power.
Nobody except her knew that she could find corpses like magic.
It wasn’t as simple as just finding dead bodies. Eva could filter which corpses she wanted to discover- 30 days since death, 10 years since burial, or 1000 years since its last heartbeat. She couldn’t find bodies that were burnt, though- they had to be kept in one piece. They couldn’t be cut into pieces. Sure, Eva could locate bodies with lost arms, heads, etc., but she couldn’t find the separate piece. Whether it was a human or a magical creature, it didn’t matter.
What was strange, though, was how she never could feel her father’s corpse anywhere. Her power didn’t have a range of how far it could go. Eva could feel it reach anywhere. She should’ve known where her father lay dead a long time ago. But of course, she would always conclude that her father was either brutally cut into small pieces or was burnt into ashes.
A faint knocking came from the door. Eva stood up and opened it to find her mother holding a piece of paper in her hands. Her mother never seemed to age, maintaining her beautiful appearance. But after her father’s death, her beauty started to falter.
“What is it, mother?”
Upon hearing her daughter’s voice, her mother started to cry tears. Surprised, Eva was fixed to the ground. She didn’t know what to do as her mother grabbed her in a desperate hug. Her mother kept on sobbing until Eva pulled away.
“Mother. What is it that saddens you so?”
Her mother restrained herself and held out the paper in her hands. On it was a glinting golden crest with two swans printed onto it. On second thought, it looked more like a letter.
“It’s your school acceptance letter,” her mother sighed. “From the School for Good and Evil.”
Eva lurched. The School for Good and Evil? She never sent an application, nor did her mother do so. She stared at her mother as she tucked the cream-white letter into Eva’s hands.
“In there will be the Flowerground ticket and the list of supplies. For some reason, they’ve all been packaged and delivered to our home too.” Tears started to fall from her mother’s eyes again. “Why you? You’re so young. You’re powerless. You won’t be able to defend yourself out there. Who sent an application for you?”
Eva stared at her mother as she sobbed. She was never good at expressing emotions. She didn’t know what to tell her or what she could tell her to comfort her. She stepped back, and slowly closed the door in front of her mother’s face. As she heard the clacking of her mother’s heels against the marble floor soften and the echoes of sobs disappear, Eva turned her back against the door and slid down. Hands shuddering, she opened the acceptance letter and pulled out the gold-lined paper. There stood the bold letters spelling out her name.
‘Eva of Jaunt Jollie,’ she read, her eyes not knowing where to go. ‘Congratulations. You have been accepted into the School for Good. On your Flowerground ticket will be the date for you to depart. We will be waiting for your arrival.’
She turned her gaze to the small crystal chandelier that shone sunlight in different ways. Eva closed her eyes when one of the rays shined onto her eyes, blinding her. She looked at the golden Flowerground ticket that was glinting to see the date.
“Tomorrow,” Eva of Jaunt Jolie talked to herself. “I’m supposed to leave tomorrow.”
This is. So. SHORT. I tried to keep up the tension, so that’s the reason- but I swear it’ll be longer next time!
It’s so gooood! I actually really admire people who manage to convey a lot of emotion with not that many words; all of my stories are super long.
Can I be tagged?
Lol random question about your username is it like Effie Trinket from the Hunger Games???
I think that’s the fifth time someone’s asked me that. Maybe the fourth, maybe sixth, let’s just call it fifth.
No, it is not, although I have read the Hunger Games. I think I searched up girl names in order to find it. Otherwise I would’ve gone with Elia after my stuffed elephant.
Oh lol okay. The Hunger Games is one of my favorite book series, so I had to ask.
This is awesome! I would love to be tagged! If you need any characters let me know, I would love to see how you write them!
