Chapter 1: A Diva Disaster
“Help! Somebody help me! It’s a disaster!” I shrieked. My mother, Clarrissa, rushed in.
“What happened? Is there a fire? I’ll get Gail!” Clarrissa panicked.
“There’s no fire! It’s even worse than that!” I wailed. Clarrissa raised an eyebrow.
“And the problem is?” she questioned, thinking that my problem wasn’t as bad as it seemed.
“I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR!” I screamed. Clarrissa rolled her eyes.
“What. A. Disaster,” she said through gritted teeth.
“I know, right? And I’m meeting Pepper, Minka and Penny Ling today for lunch at the Tea Palace!” I whined.
“OK, I’m going to see if Gail has an actual problem,” Clarrissa muttered, exiting the room to go see my younger sister.
I arrived at the Tea Palace with my hair in my face. When you see me without my friends, you think my hair is unusual, with its grey mane and its white streak in it. But Zoe has purple and pink hair, Minka has a faded pink and Penny Ling has dark blue and white hair.
“Hey, Pepper!” I turned around. Minka and Penny Ling were behind me.
“Hiya guys. Wait, where’s Zoe?” I asked. She wasn’t in the Tea Palace so where was she? My eyes scanned Gavaldon. Aha! There she was, walking up the hill.
“Darlings, you will not believe the day I’ve had! We simply must talk about it over drinks & snacks!” Zoe announced. OK, this day has taken a turn for the worst. Zoe’s stories are terrible. But I do like snacks.
“You guys don’t believe me?” I asked in disbelief. My friends, Sunil and Vinnie, looked at me with something that looked like boredom.
“Dude, we get you’re way, way, way smarter than me and smarter than Sunil, but you can’t prevent the School Master from entering Gavaldon,” Vinnie said.
“Vinnie is very much right,” Sunil added.
“Oh yeah? Well, mark my words, the School Master won’t take me! I’ll be prepared!” I cried. My plan to stop the school was going to work. It would, wouldn’t it?
I lay in bed, barely awake. Before going to sleep, I had my house on lockdown. That meant no one could get in or out. No School Master was going to take me. I closed my eyes; I couldn’t wait to rub my success in Sunil and Vinnie’s face tomorrow. With that thought, I closed my eyes and fell fast asleep.
CRASH! I woke up instantly. There was shattered glass from my window on the floor. There was a terrible storm outside but it couldn’t have caused my window to break. Looking around my empty room, I had a feeling I was not alone. The only light was from the occasional lightning and the fire from all the adults of Gavaldon as they formed a protective line around the village. I was greatly disturbed by the breaking of the window but I was tired so I shut my eyes. I heard a bird schreech. The next thing I knew I was being lifted up into the air by a bird made only of bone, no feathers. I was carried out of my house.
“No,no,no!” I clawed at the air. Six other birds flew out of houses. I recognised the people they were carrying: Sunil, Vinnie, Penny Ling, Pepper, Minka and Zoe. The girls were in the same year of school we’re in. Sunil looked at Vinnie and me and waved, before realising we were being carried out of Gavaldon.
“Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggggghhhhhh!” he screamed. This made everyone else scream. I rolled my eyes.
The birds flew across the woods. We were nowhere near Gavaldon now. But I could make something out in the distance. Oh joy, it was the School for Good and Evil. The birds zoomed towards the School for Good and dropped us.
“Yay! Handsome princes!” Zoe squealed as she and the girls were separated from us. They fell by the lake, whereas us guys fell down by the school. And I could tell Gavaldon was now only a mere memory…
