In light of @NEVEMACLEVE2 ‘s theory that Merlin might be a teenager in OTK, which you can find in her activity, I have a brand new ship: Mercola, or teenage Merlin+Nicola. My reasons for this are simple:
1. Merlin was known to be “fond of” Nicola, impressed by her smarts, motivation and wit. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if a teenage Merlin with raging hormones felt something deeper for her?
2. Both of them belong together in a way. They’re both fringe Evers (Nicola is ultra-feminist and Merlin paid more attention to his magical experiments then his studies), they’re both extremely bookish, and they’re both resourceful people. And, thanks to the Caves of Contempo, they’re both the same age, so it wouldn’t be weird. I can fantasize about a future where the two of them are working at Camelot together, advising Tedros and Agatha and poring over books in the library for new spells. In a way, they almost balance each other; Nicola’s intense and relentless, and Merlin’s a goofball who takes a more relaxed approach to life.
3. On a more serious note, both need some real, honest love. If you’ve read book 5, you probably know that Hort is beginning to doubt his relationship with Nicola, and that Sophie is beginning to recognize him as a potential lover. So poor Nicola is rendered a victim of this messy love triangle. As for Merlin, what if turning into a teenager was a kind of “do-over” for the wizard. What if perhaps he was meant to do this, as the first time around he had missed something crucial, something like true love. As the first shipper of Mercola, I’d like to think that it was because the right person simply wasn’t born in his generation, and that his true love would come nearly a century later.
4.Finally, related to #3, HOPHIE. Yes, the Hophie and Hicola wars have been raging since QFG, and after ACOT, fuel was only added to the fire. Some people, like me, were undecided. I love the idea of Hophie, yet I have a soft spot for Nicola, seeing her a bit like myself, a kind of SGE Hermione Granger, and I wanted her to have the happy ending she dreamed of. However, with this new Nicola ship, I can say I adore Nicola and ship Hophie. Plus, everyone’s happy. Sophie and Hort get their happy ending, and teenage Merlin and Nicola get theirs.
So, tell me what you think of this new ship in the comments, and if you agree or disagree with the idea.
Yes, but according to your theory, Merlin would be a teenager, so I guess they are kinda similar.
That makes a lot of sense and it is really logical but I don’t like it
Honestly if that gets Nicola out of the picture I’ll ship them more than Hestadil and Hophie.
Hmmm… logical, also Hicola and Hophie wars might stop* Like Nevemacleve2 said, giving me Raphie** vibes. Still undecided on if I like it or not… I have to think about this.
*Unfortunately, it does nothing for Jaric wars -.-
**Is that the ship name? Or is it Rophie? Cause then we’d have two Rophies: Rafal + Sophie and Rhian + Sophie, whateves I’m calling it Raphie
As much as it is logical, it seems a little wrong. Even if in physical appearance Merlin is younger, at his soul he’s still very old. I get what you mean, but that being said I don’t think it would be right.
Yet at the same time, Rafal was like a thousand years old and though he had the body and mind of a sixteen year old. I figure that a teenage Merlin would work the same way, same intelligence, same soul, but with a teenage brain and teenage body. Still, I understand your point. This was mostly an attempt to reconcile Hophie with how much I like Nicola. I’ve actually been trying to figure out a new ship for her for a while now. I mean, the only other characters before the teenage Merlin theory that I could possibly see her with besides Hort were Hester or Anadil, but I value Hestadil far too much for that. So yeah, this was mostly an attempt to ship in a way that got Nicola the happy ending I want her to have while allowing Hophie to progress unimpeded.
I’ confused. When did merlin become younger? In book 4, 5 or a cahpter of book 6 I haven’t read?
@Evilkid2 he’s at the Caves of Contempo at the end of book 5, where time goes backwards, so he’d be a teen by the time the coven finds him (I think that’s the reasoning behind the theory, since Dovey’s chapter in bk. 5 says Merlin’s there) So book 5
That is brilliant! I really want Nicola to find love and be happy, and hophie is the closer ship so far. It’s possible that Merlin can age backwards based on the lock of his beard so this can be plausible. And the part of Merlin having a soft spot for her and they can find a kindred soul in each other is really cool. I feel like it’s going to be a much less toxic verison of Rafal x Sophie if it happened.
Seeeee!! Everyone hates it when evil does it, and everyone’s like “no they tricked each other, it wasn’t love” but when good people do it, everyone’s all head over heels shipping them.
The thing is, only pure Evil follows all of the rules of Evil right down to the last letter. So if say someone has even 1% of Good in them, would it be possible for them to fall in love? Of course, if Rafal and Sophie were both 100% evil when they fell in love, then there might be a contradiction, but I think Sophie has a spot of light in her heart in the form of Agatha, which maybe wouldn’t have made her completely Evil, at least after the events at the end of Book 1. Yet Raphie was kinda toxic. The threats, the confusion, the way it pitted Sophie and Agatha against each other. There are different types of romantic love, and Raphie was the kind that destroyed both from the inside.
I think it’s because the books stated multiple times that evil can’t love, like in book 1 and 2. However Sophie proved everyone wrong because Rafael and Sophie genuinely loved each other, more on Rafal’s side. So I think it is possible but that might be because there are some contradicting details on evil’s love.
@BOOKWORM87654321 I agree. I’m honestly not a huge Raphie fan. I think Sophie wasn’t quite happy herself. And Rafal was trying to make her do things just for LOVE! I mean, I prefer Rophie.
i just want nicola to become the school master
she is “ultra-feminist”, as you said, and she would be great to head the school’s new gender equality program.
she is very smart, and would work hard to do the school proud.
she would be perfect to connect gavaldon with the rest of the woods, since she is from gavaldon.
I don’t think so…. Nicola thinks WAY too highly of herself, and she’s rude, sno.bby, and just kind of terrible. I mean, she despises Sophie from reading about her, and “loves” Hort form reading about him. Sorry, honey, that’s just not how it works. I understand that she is smart, and she has the right to talk when she knows things, but she does NOT get to pretend like she’s better than everyone else, because she isn’t.
The Storian can protect itself just fine without Nicola.
