My Ranking Points
Dovey paced back and forth behind her desk, her hands clasped behind her back and her lips pursed.
It was dead silent other than Dovey’s furious mumbling.
I gazed at the ceiling and wondered how much longer this could go on. Dovey’s heels squeaked on the tile as she swiveled to face us.
“Could one of you please do me the favor of explaining—“ Her eyes made contact with mine.
I felt a bead of sweat roll down my neck, and sent her what I hoped was an innocent smile.
1st rule of self preservation: don’t poke the bear.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Cassian facepalm. I looked over at Angelica, who was shaking her head in slow motion with a pitying look in her eyes.
Dovey began stalking towards me, her face turning an angrier shade of red with each step.
I leaned back a bit on my chair as she grew closer, as if it would protect me if Dovey decided to attack.
“Daniel Scarlet, if you don’t put on a shirt this instant I’ll trade you out for Westina, and you can go to Evil!” Dovey shouted, waving her arms about—not unlike Duck Anemone.
I felt my own temper swell, already forgetting about rule number 1.
“How was I supposed to grab a shirt when you were shoving me out the door?” I yelled back, seething. “Not everything is my fault!”
I was right, I realized as I said the words; every time something went wrong, who was the first person everyone blamed? Me.
The revelation only angered me more.
Cassian gaped at me, dumbfounded.
“You’re all the same; rich, proper, patronizing hypocrites who’ve had everything they’ve ever wanted handed to them on a silver platter.” I hissed, meeting the eyes of Dovey, then directing my gaze to Cassian. “You don’t know what it’s like,” I clenched and unclenched my fists in my lap. “You don’t have the right to judge me. You haven’t lived what I’ve lived though, you haven’t seen what I’ve seen, or done what I’ve done.” Red hot anger seeped into my cheeks. “You have no right! You all have it so easy, just follow the rules like the sheep you are. Just like you were taught.” I growled, sounding my voice unrecognizable to my ears. “And if anyone,” I kept my gaze zeroed on Dovey. “Anyone, rebels? Evil.”
“Different ideas are evil. Having a brain is evil. Fighting for what you think is right is evil too if the authority figure doesn’t agree with it.” I let out a bitter laugh. “You think I’m so bad? Take a look in the mirror, and tell me how you’re any different.” My tone grew sharper, but my voice remained at a speaking level. My lip curled as I stared Dovey down. “I know who you are. You can pretend all you want, but it won’t change anything; you aren’t any better than I am.”
Dovey pursed her lips and stared at me in silence. I grit my teeth. Her silence only made me angrier.
“You think you’re so much better, don’t you? Right now, you think I belong in Evil, don’t you? You think I’m insane? Is it really so inconceivable to you that I could be in the right?” I hissed, tilting my head.
“Angelica, Cassian. Go retrieve Westina from Dean Sophie’s office in Evil.” Dovey said.
Cassian stood up and sped out the door. Angelica detached her hand from my arm, which I hadn’t realized she had been clutching at until that moment. There were four little indented semicircles on my bicep that appeared to be filling with blood as a result.
Angelica bit her lip. “But—“
“Go. Now.” Dovey’s voice was firm and hard.
Angelica gave my hand a quick squeeze before following Cassian out the door. He was probably in Evil already if he had kept up the speed of which he had left the room.
Dovey turned to me, a tired look in her eyes.
“You know, it’s so easy to make someone the villain in a story. So easy.” I sneered as the door clicked shut behind Angelica.
So I was listening to Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac, and it reminded me of Danny’s feelings towards Westina. The lyrics seemed to describe their situation from his point of view perfectly. I thought for Westina’s perspective towards her and Danny’s relationship Love, Love, Love by Of Monsters and Men fits pretty well. But after thinking about it for a bit, maybe Swimming by Florence and the Machine fits better. Either one works, I think, but I feel like Swimming is more Westina’s style. For Angelica’s perspective on her and Danny’s relationship I would choose F***ing Perfect by P!nk, and for Danny’s view on his and Angelica’s relationship I think Guiding Light by Mumford and Sons is accurate. For Cassian to Westina, I’m Yours by Jason Mraz seemed perfect (plus it’s really cute to imagine him singing it to her). For Westina to Cassian, I was getting some Spectrum by Florence and the Machine vibes.
Also, I’d like to apologize to @autumnofwoodsbeyond for how long the wait was for this chapter. You always put out your chapters like half an hour after mine, and then I go and don’t write anything for a month (yes I scrolled back and checked). A very awesome skill that I wish I had. You are very blessed with the ability to have a seemingly never-ending multitude of amazing ideas 🙂
I burned myself out a bit both physically and mentally, and have now decided to try to do things in moderation instead of all at once. So hopefully that works out for me.
But seriously, thank you @autumnofwoodsbeyond for being an awesome collab/partner writer and sticking with this story, despite my spontaneous and fickle writing habits! All y’all give her a round of applause!!!
Hey, maybe quality over quantity is better. I find your chapters to be longer and better than mine. Anyways, great chapter!!! I’m so excited for how the story will write out, until I realize I’m supposed to write out the next part… then I get nervous!!
