Kane sat down on Elle’s pink bed, wondering how he got himself into this mess. His lip was bleeding, he had bruises all over his face, and he had gashes on his side and chest from the prince’s sword. He looked at Elle. She was busy going through a healer’s kit that was under her bed, ignoring the blood coming from her face. She grabbed a cloth and started to dab the blood off of Kane’s face. He blushed and said, “I can do it myself.”
“No, I can do it,” Elle replied, “What happened?” Kane took a deep breath.
“It all started in Chivalry Class,” he began, “We had to talk about our experience as being chivalrous. When it came around to me, I told them I didn’t have much experience. They asked me why. I made the mistake of telling them who my mom is. I could practically feel the hatred radiating off of them.
“My next class was Swordplaying and Weapons Training. We had to get into pairs, and Basher decided that he wanted to pick on me. I’ve never used a sword before, and as you can probably guess from my many cuts, he was basically born with a sword. He asked me what I was doing here, and I replied that I wasn’t my mother. I’m Good. He laughed, and said that I probably used black magic to get in here. Villains aren’t Good. The teacher tried to stop him from attacking me once he saw he wouldn’t stop, but Basher wouldn’t let up. One of the other Everboys told him to stop before I would ‘turn him into a puffer fish or something’. That’s when they started asking about my talent. They told me that if I used my talent, they would let me go. I refused. I also didn’t fight back. If I fought back, they would have seen it as an attack and called my Evil.” He looked up at Elle. “I’m not Evil, I swear,” he pleaded.
“I know,” Elle frowned, “What is your talent, by the way? You’ve never told me.”
Kane tensed, “I can’t tell you. No one knows my talent. Not even my mom.”
Elle pursed her lips, “Well then, continue your story, I guess.”
“After sword fighting was lunch. You saw what happened there,” was all Kane said.
“Why didn’t you defend yourself, Kane? Why did you make yourself look weak when we both know you’re anything but it?” Elle inquired.
“I already told you,” Kane sighed, “They would have seen it as an attack.” He put his head in his hands. “Why did I think I could do this? No one will ever believe that I’m Good!” Elle was stunned and at a loss for words. She’d never seen him so vulnerable before. Kane was always charismatic and friendly. He wasn’t the type to doubt himself.
“Kane, I…,” she started. Kane looked at her. He frowned.
“Why are you helping me?” he asked, “I thought you didn’t like me.”
“I… um… It was the Good thing to do,” she said, turning beet red. Kane looked away with hurt in his eyes.
“I see,” he said, “I can take it from here.” He took the ****** cloth out of her hands.
“Kane,” Elle said, exasperated, “Kane, I’m sorry.”
“I thought you were different, Elle, but it turns out that you’re just like them! You think I’m Evil, and nothing I do will change your mind!” Kane yelled, standing up, “Sometimes I wonder why I even try.” He stormed out of the room, leaving a stunned and guilty Elle all alone, blood still dripping from her cheek.
