I think he wants to leave it up to the fans. To me, Agatha and Sophie are 14 in book one, but others may interpret it differently. It’s a way for fans to make the characters their own without changing the direction of the story. That’s just my opinion though, and I’m not Soman.

The ages of the people in Gavaldon that are chosen for the Schools are 12-16; he never explicitly stated the age of Sophie and Agatha.
