CHAPTER TWO 🙂
Mother waved the letter angrily. I grimaced. Probably a report card with all my grades. “Yes Mother,” I sighed, and stood obediently with my hands behind my back.
“Come here.” she glared. I walked up as slowly as I could, my head bowed. I knew that Mother’s temper was always extra short after she whipped me, so I knew not to make any smart comments. I tentatively reached up and tugged the envelope from my mom’s hands. I read it.
EMMA WATERS OF THE WOODS BEYOND
SCHOOL FOR GOOD AND EVIL
I stood there in shock. Me? Was I really reading that correctly? I was getting accepted to the School for Good and Evil?! I gasped. It couldn’t be true. But there it was, in fancy blue script. I stared a little longer.
Then my mom ripped it out of my hands. “Mom!” I yelled. I almost never retaliated against her. But I couldn’t lose my one chance to go to the School for Good and Evil. I couldn’t! “Mom!” I yelled again, making wild grabs for the envelope.
She held it tight to her chest. “There is no way you are going to some stupid mumbo-jumbo fake school.” She sneered. “Ha! The ‘School for Good and Evil’. As if. Everyone knows that that place is fake. This is just a hoax.” But I could see through her lie. I saw the fear on her face as she shredded the envelope to pieces, and I knew that she was afraid that I would leave her. For a split second, I thought she actually loved me.
I shook my head. Yeah right, I thought. Would a loving mother starve and whip her daughter? Obviously not.
I couldn’t help but feel extremely at my mom for ripping my invitation. Now, I would never be able to get into the School. I shut my eyes just as a felt tears ***** at the corners of my eyes. I sprinted to my room and locked the door. I collapsed on my straw cot and wept, tears soaking the yellow hay. I didn’t even bother to go down for dinner, and before sundown I was asleep.
I dreamt that a dark shadow slipped through the door and snatched me from my bed. We were floating out the window when my foot bumped the sill.
And thats when I realized it was not a dream.
