The girl looked overjoyed and beamed but was speechless! Her admiration embarrassed Laurence, and she blushed a glowing crimson whenever Laurence spoke to her. This made Laurence very uneasy, he couldn’t say he had closed his eyes and thrown the rose blindly, hoping it would go to a decent enough girl! To his annoyance, the girl staunchly fastened herself to his side and spent every spare second talking.
Aron, Mason Cheshire and Aali sauntered up to the pew as Pollux produced yawns and droned dully, whilst the entire Theater ignored him and began to murmur to each other the about ranks. Castor rolled his eyes in disdain, as Pollux muttered uselessly to nobody in particular about curfew rules. Even the faculty had been lulled into slumber!
“Put on quite a show there! Didn’t you, son of Tedros!” Aali slouched nonchalantly on the pew.
“Well, I couldn’t let all that training go to waste, could I?” Laurence insisted chirpily.
It was Supper, and Laurence did enjoy the food! Cheshire found a new favourite, spiced lamb casserole, replacing fish. Aron balanced a lively living mushroom, bursting with energy and bounding hither with tireless vivacity. He seemed extremely fond of it, and called it Kip!
To Laurence and Cheshire’s exasperation, the girl at the Welcoming slid beside him, interrupting the animated conversation they were in the middle of. Only then, Laurence realised he didn’t even know her name!
“Julie of Avalon,” The girl babbled, as if reading his mind. She didn’t take any notice of Laurence’s desperate glances. Julie then launched into a vigourous conversation with him, and Laurence had to struggle to keep up with her curious questions and endless talk. He breathed with relief when Supper ended. He felt drained and weary, and slumped down on his bed.
“That girl tire you out?” Mason chuckled. “It didn’t look like she was going to stop anytime soon!”
Laurence had been bored out of his mind. He made a mental note to avoid Julie whenever he could
and nodded with a wry smile. He was downcast for the rest of the evening, wishing heartily he had thrown his to rose to anyone but Juliet of Avalon.
A luminous, crystal white whole moon gazed into the window, casting clear pearly bright shadows, on to a Great Lawn. It was a tranquil, soothing feel, the world seemed to move in s l o w – m o t i o n.
Serene, at a standstill, the School for Good and Evil relaxed and the aggressive strife hushed-
Laurence froze. A sinister chill ran up with spine, making him shiver wildly, despite the humid night air. Then the sky turned cloudy and black, the moon and stars were engulfed in mist fog, rain lashed out and a storm began. The unmistakable sound of thunder rumbled like a starved monster and Laurence watched streaks of lighting flash and fizzle in electricity. It was an amazing sight. Laurence gazed in awe at the storm that had broken out so suddenly. Then he bolted up from his bed, a jolt of realisation running through him like an electric shock. Springing up to the window, he hurriedly scanned his eyes across the grounds. Then he saw it! Something that had been causing the storm. A swift shadow, suspended in the air, gliding effortlessly towards one of the towers.
The clock struck midnight.
Laurence jumped. The clang echoed back at him and he staggered back overwhelmed by tonight’s strange events, a mixture of fear and exhilaration tearing through his body. He fell, right into a very sleepy, irritated Aron!
