Chapter 15: Up Instead of Forwards
The greatest shocks always come when your not expecting them. Only then, Laurence saw the sign fastened to the grubby Nevers ranking board and his heart lurched so abruptly he thought he was having a heart attack. The sign read:
Top three Nevers: Report to Dean Sophie’s office now.
A crisis? An attack? Laurence tensed. He felt a steady hand on his shoulder, whirled around, gagged then dropped onto the grass, struck dumb.
Jake Frost smiled triumphantly. . .or more cruelly. . .but was that pleasantly? Indeed, somewhere beneath the glacial winds around the surface, under all that stiffness, Jake was smiling in an amiable manner!
“Ella was slightly. . .well. . .she wouldn’t want me to tell you this but. . ” He trailed off.
Laurence pounced. “Tell me!”
Jake let out a small sigh. “Ella’s always had a terrible temper, she’s always been slightly. . .afraid. . .of princes.” Laurence raised an eyebrow. Ella did not strike as afraid in the least! Laurence tittered and Jake inhaled. He was scuffing his shoes spraying soil everywhere and fussing with his knees, which suddenly appeared extremely interesting to him.
“She’s had rough encounters with other princes. She thinks of them as conceited airheads who think the world of themselves. You know, she’s really an. . .” Once again, Jake trailed off. “I really shouldn’t be telling you this, but Ella is. . .” Jake paused. He sighed. “Half-elf.”
Laurence blinked in surprise. So that was why she always wore a hood! There was nothing wrong with being half-elf, wasn’t there?
Anyhow, he needed to be in Professor Dovey’s office now. Laurence brushed the dirt off, then dragged Cheshire into Good. They barreled through the vibrant candy classrooms. Through Cinderella Commons, up the blue Honor staircase, then into Dovey’s office, making an ear-splitting, grating noise which caused Dovey to peer in disapproval at the pair with narrowed eyes.
Emerging from the rim of her spectacles, Laurence suppressed a laugh. What could she do about anything? For the first time, Laurence felt only hopelessness and his heart was a faded, black hole. Suddenly, the professor sprung up. She seemed to be fizzing with excitement, face flushed pink and twitching nervously.
“Come with me.” Then she scurried away. It took forever, and after a while Cheshire caught on. He nudged Laurence.
“She’s taking us to the School for Evil.” That looked true. Dovey’s expression was giving it away, her eyes gleaming, body trembling, the brisk pace. Laurence and Cheshire exchanged curious glances. It was quite clear the Dean of Good was heading towards the School for Evil. Laurence had to jog to keep up with the tense, elderly Fairy Godmother. They blasted through Merlin’s Menagerie, then Dovey stopped.
She slunk towards the pond, under a carved statue of Tedros proposing to Agatha.
Then she jumped into the pond and disappeared beneath a cascade of bubbles.
By now, Cheshire was completely and utterly bewildered and stood, gawking at the bubbles still frothing and foaming. Laurence, who had been just as baffled, allowed a pang of memory find him.
“Merlin’s Menagerie is really a portal to Halfway Bridge.” Agatha’s words resounded faintly. Laurence prodded Cheshire.
“Chess! It’s a portal to Halfway Bridge.” He pointed to Halfway Bridge, flanked by grey fog. Cheshire wrinkled him nose.
“Alright then.” Cheshire gazed at the School for Evil, menacing and towering above slimy sludge.
Laurence plummeted into the pond, bobbed at the surface, then vanished under the spewing churns. Cheshire gulped, then followed Laurence in.
Laurence could feel himself free-falling through water. He was engulfed in a bitter whirlwind, but he was still dry! Then he heard a ‘SPLAT’ and he pitched down onto stone, twisting his ankle. Laurence heard Cheshire grumble as Cheshire walloped the stone behind him.
Professor Dovey glared down at them, Ella by her side.
Instead of walking to the School for Evil, Dovey flicked a wand, then her and the three Evers shot up.
Towards the School Master’s Tower. . .
Well done if you managed to read all that.

You heard what he said!!! Also I’m confused. I thought one of the reasons you hadn’t been writing in a while was because you didn’t know what should happen at Dovey’s office so I posted my next chapter thinking you would post yours after you read mine and you DID. The thing is though I can’t seem to figure out how this chapter blends in with mine. I AM SO CONFUSED!!! 🙁
Wow that was amazing Louis! This is becoming an amazing story, please write more soon!!! 🙂
