THEORY: The Snake’s Real Name Is Rafal!
So, I was re-reading ACOT last night when I noticed something. In the chapter where Nicola and Hort go to Foxwood, they break into the Dean’s office at Arbed House. While Nicola is looking through the files we find out that Japeth is actually the Snake’s middle name. His first initial is “R”. We are currently unaware of what the R stands for, but I believe it stands for Rafal.
-First off, his twin brother’s name is Rhian, the Good school master. It is possible that Evelyn named these two this way because “Japeth” was not the best kid while Rhian appeared to be a Good kid. Remember, Japeth supposedly chased Evelyn away.
-Also, Rhian had just a bit of Good in him. He saved our main character’s lives and was remotely helpful. “Japeth”, on the other hand, was not and basically made life a living heck.
-Another thing to bring up is that in the original story, Rafal killed his brother. What did Japeth do? Kill Rhian.
-It makes sense for Evelyn to name her children after the School Masters. We’re not sure what she did after she left her children for Arbed House, but I think she took over SGE not long after. Perhaps it was in her original plan, and this fueled her to name her children this way?
For my last piece of evidence:
-Also in the original story, Rafal became the overseer of the Storian. Lionsmane is really just Japeth’s scim. Now that Rhian’s dead, Japeth watches over Lionsmane.
    I hope this made sense!

maybe the r stands for Rhian.

          @kittykat456 Japeth’s brother’s name is Rhian, tho.

maybe there mother named them both Rhian because she wanted to confuse the school master

Also, maybe “Japeth” goes by his middle name because he hates the School for Good and Evil, and doesn’t want to be associated with the School Master.

That could be because they did metion that Rhian was the name of the god school master. So its possible Rafal is Japeths real name.

I LOVE your theory. It also makes total sense as Japeth could be mistreating Sophie for revenge.

AHHHHHHH! Such a great theory! I hope some the theories on the website make it into the book, and I definitely want this one in OTK.

But I think that Evelyn didn’t want the evil school master to know that she has twins named after him and his twin.

OMG I REALISED THAT YESTERDAY TOO! I feel like maybe Japeth went by Rafal until he found out Rafal was the School Master’s name and the School Master killed his mother. And I was reading the part of QFG where they first meet Japeth and Sophie says “Rafal?” and i found that so hilarious that if that is his name then she just literally said his name.

I also think the thing book 6 is gonna be based around (good evil, boy girl, old new, truth lies, past present) is Life and Death. Coz Rafal is dead but if Japeth’s first name is Rafal his name is still alive. And if Aric comes back to life (hopefully!) then that would fit as well

This is good! It also makes sense, beca I think in TLEA Evelyn was acting like she was in love with the School Master – Rafal

And if “Japeth” is actually Rafal ( HE BETTER BE ) then I can end my funeral for him!
