Lyra stared fiercely at the newcomer. Pantalaimon changed into a beady-eyed hawk and perched on her shoulder.
The girl had pallid, ghostly skin, and her dæmon was in the form of a hairless cat. Her black hair and eyes matched the color of her ragged frock.
“The Gobblers are here,” she said. “They were in the cemetery, like shadow creatures. They take children like you and me and send ‘em on a ship North to a School. I’ve seen ‘em.”
“You en’t,” said Lyra. “I know all about ‘em. My friend, he was there when a boy was taken. Their leader is a beautiful lady who plays the flute and makes you fall into a trance, and then, when you’re under their spell, they cut you up and – ”
“They teach ‘em magic at the school,” continued the girl. “I reckon it’s something to do with Dust.”
Instantly, Pantalaimon’s feathers stood up and Lyra went still. “How d’you know that?”
“I hear things,” she said absently. “Let’s go home, Reaper,” said the child to her dæmon. Then she climbed down from the roof, and both girl and cat vanished.
