The Trials Among Us
Three Years Ago…
Leaves crackled under our feet as we ran along the sidewalk. We stopped in front of an orphanage before mother turned to me.
“Lia take care of your brothers and make sure no one knows your true identity.”
“Wait, why? What’s going on?” I questioned. Mother smiled at me sadly.
“Oh my precious daughter, I wish I could explain everything to you but that day has not come yet. Lia, listen to me. You must take Tyler and Aiden with you and go into that orphanage without looking back. Do you understand me?”
I shook my head. “Yes, I understand but what about you? And why do we have to go to this orphanage?”
Just after I said that, an icy wind picked up and swirled around us. Leaves and dust being kicked up off the ground, and stormy clouds covered us from the shining moonlight. Mother paled as she clutched my brother tight in her arms.
“They’re here.” She whispered.
I turned towards her. “Who’s here Mother? What’s going on?”
There was a moment of silence before she opened her mouth and spoke in an agitated voice. “Lia, take Tyler and run as fast as you can with Aiden to the orphanage and don’t you dare stop or look back. Once you reach the orphanage, go inside and lock the doors, don’t come out at all.”
She put down Tyler and he stood next to me and Aiden. “But-”
“I said go already, so just go!” Mother shouted. I turned around and grabbed Tyler’s hand. Then without looking back, I ran as fast as I can dragging Tyler as Aiden ran beside me. We got to the orphanage at a quick amount of time and I ushered Tyler inside with Aiden.
Don’t look back. That’s what Mother said. But I can’t just leave her, I had to help her. I turned around to see her looking at a shadowy figure in the distance.
“MOM!” I screamed. She looked back at me and smiled before disappearing in the wind. I stared at the spot where she’d gone. I looked up and saw the shadowy figure speed towards me with amazing speed, as if it was riding the wind. Panicked, I ran into the orphanage and locked the door shut. My mind replayed what just happened.
My mother is gone. I tried to convince myself that it wasn’t true but, no matter how much I resist, I had to face the truth that my mother was dead. My eyes teared up as I sank to my knees, my face full of grief and sorrow. My tears ran down my face as I sat there grieving over her. I then stood up and wiped away my tears. I already lost too much, my father and my mother. I can’t lose my brothers, they are the only family I have left.
I walked into a dimmed hallway and found a well-lit room and walked inside. There, sitting down in big chairs, drinking hot coco were my brothers. When Aiden saw me, he walked over.
“Hey, where’s mom?” He asked. I smiled sadly at him. “Don’t worry about mom too much. We just need to stay at the orphanage and help take care of Tyler.” Aiden frowned at me but then nodded his head before turning back to Tyler. I sat down, thinking that sooner or later, the truth would come out and that’s when I knew that this family is never going to be the same.
