The Elemental Rebellion
We finally swooped through the window of my room, though Theo cleared out pretty quickly after that. Anya walked out soon after, claiming that she needed to get something from her room. I was left to try out my new power.
First, I fetched a knife from the kitchens. I cut my hand, but no matter how hard I tried, I could not get it to heal.
I fell to the ground. I had known that it wasn’t real; deep down, I knew that I was worthless.
And then I had power –
– and then I was special –
– and then Anya kissed me –
– and then we met Theo –
– and now I am worthless again –
I was interuptted by a blinding flash of light, and closed my eyes quickly against the wave of shining light. I opened my eyes –
– and saw a hole in the wall, cleaved out by me and my power.
I shut out the thought of what it could do to a body, to a human, to a person. I had done that – it was my power that had broken it, that was powerful enough to shake the castle to its roots. I breathed in, and out, and tried again. This time, I tried to keep it contained, aimed at a small piece of glass in the remains of the window. I focused all my attention on that tiny spot –
and it exploded all over the windowframe. In my excitement, I had not realised that the wound I had made in my hand had closed over. It seemed I was powerful. At last.
Phoebe waylaid me in the corridors. I sighed. I thought I had done a good job of avoiding her since I had got here.
“So, how’s it going?” she asked excitedly. “Have you infiltrated the royals yet?”
I laughed. “It’s only been two days, Fee.”
She glared at me. “You know I hate it when you call me that!” she said angrily.
I smiled at how easily we’ed slipped into our old ways. Before she had got caught up with the Resistance leaders. Before she started hating the Royals with a vengeance. Before she learnt *********** – and killed her first victim. “That’s why I do it, Fee.”
“Shut up!” she squealed. “So, how’s it going?”
I remembered before all those things had happened, when we had played in the alleyways next to the Stream, her sending ripples through the earth and me flying above it. I remembered when she had come to our house one day after her mum started drinking, and swore revenge on her father, who had left them one night without a word. I remembered the day when she came back with his blood on her hands.
