My Ranking Points
In the Water kingdom, dead people are floated out to sea.
I don’t know what’s brought on this pessimistic feeling. I just know that the pain from my leg is driving me mad, and I feel like I should die. But I have to much to live for.
Back to the funerals.
They say that in the Fire Kingdom, people are burnt into ashes. They call this cremation. They bury people in the Earth Kingdom, like they used to do in the Air Kingdom. No-one knows what they do in the Air Kingdom anymore. Probably… I don’t know. What can you do for air?
When I die, I’ll be past caring how I’m… sent away. But I think I’d like to be cremated. It seems like it would be easy. An easy way to leave this world.
Why are you thinking about dying? I’ve got no plans to leave yet. I have unfinished business.
Yes. Unfinished business like killing my father.
I still can’t get used to thinking of Lyn as the same person as me.
Huh. I’m not the same person as you. Think of us as… sisters.
I sit. I sleep. And I wait.
Anya’s POV (finally!):
I run towards the room that I think Evie’s in. I say “think” because no-one will tell me where she is. I sort of got it from… logical deduction.
And more than a bit of spying.
The new members… I don’t know about them. I think it’s wrong to do what they call a “clean sweep”. That’s where they essentially kidnap people and take them in if they support them. I say “them”. I don’t think I’ll ever get used at saying “us”.
What they do with the ones that don’t support them…
I don’t know. No-one does. I feel like it’s a terrible secret, but I can understand why they want to keep it that way. To do anything else would spread discord among the Resistance. And that can’t happen.
United we are strong. That’s the motto of the Resistance. The mantra. The symbol.
I push open the door – and there, on the bed, is Evie. Slightly pale, but still alive. And at least slightly okay.
I run at her and hug her, and as she winces I notice how thin she is. She always used to be slim, but this… I can feel her ribs sticking out. And of course, there’s her leg.
I pull the cover of the bed down. Her leg doesn’t look as bd as when I first saw it, But it’s still pretty horrific.
“I will kill whoever did this.” I am shocked by the venom in my voice.
“Join the queue,” she replies, her voice jagged and exhausted.
“I’m serious, Evie. I will kill him.” I don’t like her teasing me. Not about something as serious as that.
“Ooh, look at this. My girlfriends a ******.” She calps her hands over her mouth as I am stuck witha delicious happiness that creeps through my body.
“Really?” I ask, my vouce tinged with joy.
She smiles. “Really.”
