That far away place, chapter #6 find the other chapters here: @scubatuba
I awake early in the morning, just as always. There’s a comforting warmth clutching my side, Carla. I smile down at her sleeping face. She looks even more innocent in sleep, if that’s possible. As I carefully extract myself from her grasp, she fidgets, but rests soundly. Shower time. I shampoo my hair, then comb it out, apply a face scrub, and dry myself. After I get dressed -my clothing being a baby blue silky dress, with ruffles at the bottom- I tie my hair up in a ponytail, and adorn myself with a head band sporting extremely realistic flowers. I find my way downstairs, where the beams of light flow in from the windows, showing off our kitchen, the counter scorched black, and the floor tinted gray with the fine layer of ash that still remains. I sigh sadly, remembering the cause of this. An oil fire. I wave my hand in the air, as I clear my thoughts, as though swatting away a bothersome fly. Mom and dad are going to call some people tomorrow to come and fix up the kitchen, but it’ll take a while, and it’ll be expensive. I take a moment to imagine the other evergirls that I’ll meet at school, surely, they’ll all be wealthier then my family, and they’ll where more makeup, and know how to walk in four inch heals all day, when the tallest I’ve ever worn have been three inches, and even then I almost broke my ankle. Yes, I’ll be an oddity at that school, but I don’t mind all that much, I don’t need everyone to like me, I just want a few friends.
Later that day, I found myself buying a few sweets with my pocket money, wanting to share them with the rest of my family to brighten the mood. Some cupcakes, and a few chocolates were passed over the counter, followed by money. I smelled the sugary confections as I walked home, passing a few houses as I went. When I opened the door to my house, I saw Carla practicing her knitting, making something vaguely scarf shaped.
“Hey, mousy” I called, she immediately set down her “scarf” and walked over to me.
“What’s that?” She asked, peeking in the bag.
“Sweets, now go get mom and dad so I can give them some” Her eyes brightened, and she trotted off, her pigtails bouncing behind her. I set the bag down on the coffee table, and melt into the sofa. I think about how this will only last for a few more weeks, and I begin to get nervous, I shake my head, flinging the thought away, like trash.
“Carla tells us you bought sweets” says mom, with dad at her side. Carla runs down the steps and asks me a question with the hopeful look in her eyes.
“yes, you can have some now” She beams and plunges into the bag, searching for a pastry that’s to her liking.
“Thank you!” She says. Mom walks over, and takes a small chocolate, and dad finds a cupcake.
“Yes, thank you, Jamie, you shouldn’t have” dad says with a smile that gives it away that a really SHOULD have. The rest of the afternoon passes, and we joke and laugh, and eat cupcakes, and it’s great. Later on me and Carla go outside and go for a run, just because we feel like it. We run for what feels like hours, then we slow to a walk, and take a moment to appreciate our surroundings. The houses, shops, and market are all pretty far apart, and we’re in a small meadow, where the grass reaches up and tickles our knees, and the sun reaches it’s arms out to us as it disappears over the horizon, caressing the trees, and bouncing off of Carla’s curls just in the right way to make her glow. This is what I never want to leave, what i never want to let go of. This little girl, who in a few weeks will be gone from my world, this little girl who will change so much in the years I’m gone, this little girl, who will never be the same as she is now, this little girl, who, in a way, I will never see again, this little girl, who I must not forget. A tear rolls down my cheek. Warm, and pure. Just like this little girl.
