Prologue part 2
One night, just before midnight, in Gavaldon, a woman was gathering up her things so that she could go home. Just as she had everything together, she heard muted voices talking to each other on the fringe of the forest gates. They came closer and closer, so the woman hid in some nearby bushes.
“Are we there yet? I can’t go any further tonight”, a woman with long, sleek, black hair and a ***** dress that used to be white asked. There were small twigs tangled in her hair, and she was panting with one hand on her swollen, pregnant belly.
“We are here, my love. I’ll see if there is room anywhere”, a man with a tattered, faded red flannel shirt and old grimy jeans said. His scraggly, light brown hair covered his eyes. He sounded exhausted and hungry. Suddenly, he whirled around and stared at some bushes that had moved in the opposite direction that the wind was blowing in. “Is anyone there?”, his gruff voice sounded gruffer and menacing that it had a minute ago, “Come out! I know you’re in there!”
A petite woman with curly auburn-brown hair stood up nervously. “What- “, her voice squeaked, “what do you want with me?”
“Do you have a place where we could stay until my wife has our baby?” the man asked.
Her face melted with relief and empathy. “Yes, I do. You are lucky I found you and not the Elders”, she shivered, “because I am the midwife of this town, so I can help you and your wife.”
“Thank you!”, the woman said with gratitude and joy. “We were worried that we would find nowhere to stay.”
“You are welcome. By the way, my name is Leilani. Follow me.”, Leilani said.
One month later
By that time, Leilani had found the mysterious man and woman’s names. The woman’s name was Sage, and the man’s name was Cypress. They were very grateful for Leilani’s help. One night, as Cypress was getting firewood, Sage gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. They named her Tigerlilly because she had eyes that looked fierce and strong, but at the same time they looked compassionate and caring. She had little curls on her head that stuck out like Medusa’s, and her skin was olive-brown. Later, by the warm fire, Sage told Leilani everything about her and Cypress- and why they came to Gavaldon.
